The Gay Lefts Freak out over Matt Hissey's Comments At CPAC

The gay left -  from Towelroad to Joemygod have been flipping out about Matt Hissey's comments at GOProuds CPAC party.

He said, and I quote. "I don't really like gay people that much. Gay people frustrate me, the stereotypical gay people, it frustrates me...someone who puts on a total act. I understand that some guys are feminine, which is fine. But some guys, at some point, are normal, straight-acting, whatever and the next minute they're jumping up and down. It just frustrates me. The whole conservative thing is just be yourself, be an individual and just don't be someone you're not. If someone does or does not accept you, that's fine but don't change who you are to look different to others."

Please tell me what is wrong with this? He is not saying in any way, shape, or form that feminine men are bad or are a disgrace to the gay community. Instead, the thrust of his argument is that to put on an act for people, to fit a stereotype, to do what other are expecting of you - then it is wrong. It is not wrong to be feminine, but what is wrong is if you are "straight-acting" aka. no one would know you were gay unless you told them, yet try to "fit in" to the gay community's mold of what it means to be a gay man. That is not being true to yourself (something that the gay community is supposed to be all about), and is instead attempting to gain acceptance from society. This is just as bad as someone staying in the closet because they want to be accepted by their friends and family, its just the other extreme.

I have a feeling that the gay left is just throwing their own "Hissy Fit" because they know what he is saying is true.

  1. Speaking or writing for myself - because those two bloggers are demonstrably hypocritical beyond belief - I would supposed the freak out stems from the fact that it is Mr. Hissey is displaying all the stereotypes he is opposed to.

  2. I'm not sure how much either blogger is freaking out. (I'm also not sure how they are being hypocritical -- though I'm open to learning how they are on this second point). Andy didn't put too much of a spin on the issue, though it would have been nice to hear about some of the interviewees. Joe has been much more bemused by the whole CPAC/GOProud relationship. (Then again, he has this whole back/forth thing going on with the GOProud crew. Neither side is very nice to each other.)

Maybe it's just my definition of "freak out". I just see it.

  3. Hypocritical, Jon, as in, these two bloggers make no mention of the fact how much the so called 'gay left' are often their own worst enemy.

For example, at Creating Change, two attendees to the event walked right of CC and into the arms of Peter LaBarbera.

At CPAC, Lt. Dan Choi who sold out his integrity, went to CPAC, outed a gay man for no apparent reason other than he was nearby on his Grndr, fell in love with a white supremacist group, and openly expressed his love and admiration for Phyllis Schafly, Rick Santorrum, and several other haters.

Neither Joe or Towle have yet to call him out.

Bilerico, meanwhile, cut an ten minute infomercial for PFOX; at no time asking them whether they advocated gay teen bullying or ex-gays complicit in the murder of an activist in Uganda.

Joe or Towle have not called them out either.

  4. To NG - Hissey was not necessarily opposed to the stereotypes, that was not what he was saying. He was saying that he is opposed to having to act a certain way because it is expected of you to.

Jon - Though Andy may have not been "freaking out" so to speak, his comments section was. I probably should have clarified what I was meaning there. As for Joe, he misconstrued Hissey's argument (hopefully not purposefully) in order to get a more virulent reaction. Which, if you read the comments section of that post, he got.

That was kinda what I was meaning by freaking out.

  5. NG: Dan Choi's attendance at CPAC has hardly been unquestioned. Then again, he's as free as anyone to buy a ticket and go. As far as the Creating Change thing goes, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Kyle: Maybe that's part of my problem. I try not to read the comments secion in Joe's or Towle's blog (as well as many other bloggers and online newspapers) so I hadn't (and still haven't) read any of the comments associated with those blog articles. Too much sniping, especially on those bigger blogs (both left- and right-leaning).

Like I wrote before, it would've been nice to have some of the other people in that video highlighted in addition to Hickey.

  6. Hissey sissy just like Palin - spouts off a couple of sound bytes but can't explain what he means because... he's just parroting sound bytes. LoL
